William H. Rastetter, Ph.D.
Chairman of the Board and co-Founder
In addition to his role as Chairman of the Board at Receptos, Dr. Rastetter has served since 2006 as Partner at Venrock, a premier venture capital firm. Prior to Receptos and Venrock, Dr. Rastetter was Executive Chairman of Biogen Idec, from the merger of the two companies in 2003 through the end of 2005. He joined Idec Pharmaceuticals at its founding in 1986 and grew it to a multi-billion-dollar market valuation company, while serving as Chairman and CEO. Prior to Idec, he was Director of Corporate Ventures at Genentech, Inc. and served as well in a scientific capacity at Genentech. Dr. Rastetter also serves as the Chairman of Illumina, Inc., and of Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. Adding to his corporate background, Dr. Rastetter held various faculty positions at MIT, won the award for "Excellence in the Teaching of Chemistry" at Harvard and is an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow. He is the author of numerous scientific papers and patent applications in the fields of organic and bio-organic chemistry, protein and enzyme engineering, and biotechnology. Dr. Rastetter holds a B.S. in Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Chemistry from Harvard University.
Faheem Hasnain
President and CEO
Prior to joining Receptos, Mr. Hasnain was the president and chief executive officer and a director of Facet Biotech Corporation (Nasdaq: FACT), a biology-driven antibody company with a focus in multiple sclerosis and oncology. He held that position from December 2008 until the company's acquisition by Abbott Laboratories in April 2010. Previously, Mr. Hasnain was president, chief executive officer and a director of PDL BioPharma, Inc. (Nasdaq: PDLI) from October 2008 until Facet Biotech was spun off from PDL BioPharma in December 2008. From October 2004 to September 2008, Mr. Hasnain served at Biogen Idec Inc., a biotechnology company specializing in neurological disorders, autoimmune disorders and cancer, most recently as executive vice president in charge of the oncology/rheumatology strategic business unit. Prior to Biogen Idec, Mr. Hasnain held roles with Bristol-Myers Squibb, where he was president of the Oncology Therapeutics Network, and for 14 years at GlaxoSmithKline and its predecessor organizations. Mr. Hasnain was appointed chairman of the board of Ambit Biosciences Corporation in November 2010 and has served on the board of directors of Somaxon Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: SOMX) since September 2010. Mr. Hasnain received a B.H.K. and B.Ed. from the University of Windsor Ontario in Canada.
Fred Aslan, M.D.
Vice President of Venrock
Dr. Aslan joined Venrock in 2006 and focuses on investments in biotechnology and medical devices. Earlier in his career, Fred was Director of Business Development and Head of Investor Relations for CuraGen Corporation, an oncology-focused drug development company sold to Celldex Therapeutics (NASDAQ:CLDX). In this role, he was responsible for strategic planning, the in-licensing of a clinical stage oncology product, securing sell-side analyst coverage and helping raise over $100 million. Prior to CuraGen, he worked at the Boston Consulting Group where he advised biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies on a host of strategic and operational initiatives. Dr. Aslan has a B.S. in Biology from Duke University, an M.D. from Yale University and an M.B.A. from Harvard University.
Kristina Burow
Partner of ARCH Venture Partners
Kristina Burow is a Partner with ARCH, joining the firm in 2002. Her investment focus includes biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, alternative energy, and chemicals and specialty materials companies. Ms. Burow is a co-founder and director of Sapphire Energy and a director of Kilimanjaro Energy, Lycera, Receptos and Limerick BioSciences. She has participated in the funding and development of several other portfolio companies including Accelerator Corporation, Achaogen, Ensemble Therapeutics, Kythera Biopharmaceuticals, Ikaria, Quanterix and Siluria Technologies.
Ms. Burow joined ARCH from the Novartis BioVenture Fund in San Diego where she was involved in numerous investments in the life science sector. Previously, as an early employee at the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation (GNF), she directed Chemistry Operations and was active in Business Development. Ms. Burow holds an M.B.A. from The University of Chicago, an M.A. in Chemistry from Columbia University, and a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley.
Doug Cole, M.D.
General Partner of Flagship Ventures
Dr. Cole joined Flagship in 2001. He focuses on Life Science investments. Among the investments he has done are Agios Pharmaceuticals, Alvine Pharmaceuticals, Aveo Pharmaceuticals, Avedro, Concert Pharmaceuticals, Quanterix, Seventh Sense Biosystems, and Tetraphase. He co-founded Ensemble Discovery with Noubar Afeyan and Professor David Liu of Harvard University, and he served as CEO of the company in its initial stages. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Agios, Avedro, Concert, Ensemble, Quanterix, Resolvyx, Selecta, Seventh Sense, and Tetraphase. He formerly served on the Board of Directors of CombinatoRx, Aveo and Morphotek (acquired by Eisai, Inc.). He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Boards of the Spinal Muscular Atrophy Foundation, the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, and the Harvard Technology Development Accelerator Fund, and the Genetics Advisory Council of the Harvard-Partners Center for Genetics and Genomics. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Spinal Muscular Atrophy Foundation and the Birch Rock Camp. Dr. Cole joined Flagship from Vertex Pharmaceuticals, where, as Program Executive, he led a multidisciplinary program that conducted preclinical development through Phase II studies in tissue protection and repair, oversaw an international research collaboration, and was responsible for identifying strategic market and technology opportunities in multiple arenas. Previous to that, he was Medical Director at Cytotherapeutics in charge of various research and clinical activities related to the company's cell-based therapeutic technologies. In 1992, Dr. Cole was appointed Instructor in Neurology at Harvard Medical School and an Assistant in Neurology at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He established a research program investigating the mechanistic basis of neuronal signaling events and plasticity in neuro-psychiatric disorders with the support of the NIH and several non-profit research foundations. Dr. Cole earned an A.B. magna cum laude with High Distinction in English from Dartmouth College, where he was a Senior Fellow and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. He obtained post-graduate training in medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and in neurology the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA.
Raymond C. Stevens, Ph.D.
Professor, Departments of Molecular Biology & Chemistry at The Scripps Research Institute and co-Founder
Dr. Stevens is a Professor in the Departments of Molecular Biology and Chemistry at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California where he is focused on both the basic and applied areas of structural biology. Prior to moving to Scripps in 1999, Dr. Stevens was a Professor of Chemistry and Neurobiology at the University of California, Berkeley. He has helped to pioneer the area of high throughput structural biology, founding multiple biotechnology companies including Syrrx (now Takeda San Diego), as well as establishing several National Institutes of Health supported structural biology research centers. Dr. Stevens has published more than 240 peer reviewed publications in the past 20 years, focusing primarily in the area of structural biology and structure based drug discovery including involvement in the development of Tamiflu™, Kuvan™, PEG-PAL™, and Alogliptin™. He obtained his B.S. in Chemistry at the University of Southern Maine, his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Southern California, and conducted his post-doctoral research in structural biology in the Chemistry Department at Harvard University.
S. Edward Torres
Managing Director at Lilly Ventures
Mr. Torres oversees Lilly Ventures, a venture capital subsidiary of Eli Lilly and Company. Lilly Ventures manages $200M in capital and invests in start-up biopharmaceutical and medical technology companies in North America and Europe. He brings 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and venture capital businesses to Lilly Ventures. Since co-founding Lilly Ventures, he has led the investments in, and previously served on the boards of, Serenex (acquired by Pfizer), Conforma Therapeutics (acquired by Biogen Idec), Cabrellis Pharmaceuticals (acquired by Pharmion Corporation) and Fluidigm. Mr. Torres currently sits on the boards of Cylene Pharmaceuticals, Receptos, Trinity Biosystems and Viamet Pharmaceuticals as well as various non-profit institutions. Prior to joining Lilly Ventures, he had a diverse set of experiences throughout the domestic and international pharmaceutical businesses including operational finance, planning, M&A, business development and global marketing roles. Mr. Torres received a B.A. from Creighton University and a M.B.A. from the University of Michigan Business School, where he was a Consortium Fellow.
